What is a used vehicle warranty?

A used vehicle warranty is a written guarantee designed to protect you from the costs of unexpected mechanical and electrical repairs once your manufacturer’s warranty has ended.

As vehicles age, the risk of component failure increases. By covering the cost of major repairs, a warranty helps prevent large, unplanned bills and provides reassurance that you’re financially protected if something goes wrong.

WSG’s market-leading warranties are currently available for traditional cars, electric cars (EVs) and hybrid cars. Warranties for light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans are coming soon.

Is a vehicle warranty worth buying?

Vehicle repair costs have risen sharply in the UK and the average car repair bill now stands at £648, based on our paid claims from the last 12 months. What’s more, our recent driver survey* revealed that almost 60% of households couldn’t afford a large bill without borrowing.

For an affordable one-off annual premium or small monthly cost, an extended WSG warranty provides a financial safety net against unexpected repairs by paying to repair or replace thousands of parts and their associated labour charges.

From expensive engine and gearbox failures to the smaller faults such as sensors, alternators and coil springs, a WSG warranty has you covered.

About WSG

Warranty Solutions Group is the UK’s premium and highest rated provider of extended used vehicle warranties.

Underpinned by one mission of being the most trusted warranty company, we proudly protect hundreds of thousands of motorists every year from unexpected vehicle repair bills and work in partnership with almost 3,000 dealerships across the country.

With WSG, there’s no jargon, endless exclusions or difficult claim processes - just superior warranty coverage backed by thousands of five star reviews, speedy service and real people that care when you need us.

That’s our promise to you.

Which vehicle warranty is the best?

Not all extended warranties are created equal. At WSG, we’re incredibly proud of our award-winning products and the peace of mind they provide against unexpected vehicle repairs.

Each of our warranties has been carefully designed from the ground up with one goal in mind: to bring you the most advanced coverage available for used vehicles in the UK today.

Our warranties offer truly market-leading protection, covering thousands of parts and faults - including many normally excluded by other providers. What’s more, where others won’t pay towards diagnosis costs, consequential damage or wear & tear, we cover all of those as standard.

That’s why we only offer one superior level of warranty cover per vehicle type. Our focus will always be quality and best-in-class protection, so you can be sure you’re purchasing the most comprehensive warranty coverage for your vehicle.

But don’t just take our word for it. With thousands of five star reviews across Feefo, TrustPilot and Google (and an average rating of 4.8 stars), there’s a reason we’re the most trusted provider.

What does a WSG warranty cover?

An extended warranty from Warranty Solutions Group covers you for the failure of virtually all of your vehicle’s mechanical, electrical and electronic parts. Different vehicle types contain different parts and quantities of parts so please refer to the relevant product page for yours, but our traditional car and van warranties each include around 6,000 components.

From engines and gearboxes to suspensions, braking systems, sensors and even advanced multimedia systems, we pay towards the cost of repairing or replacing those parts, plus the associated labour costs. For each repair, you can claim up to your chosen claim limit.

We also include:

  • Wear & tear for the life of the policy (cover for parts that have simply worn out)
  • Diagnosis costs (labour time to diagnose the fault)
  • And consequential damage (damage caused to other covered parts)

Most warranty companies will either exclude these benefits, heavily restrict the amount you can claim or offer them as optional extras. We’re proud to be different.

What does a WSG warranty NOT cover?

No extended vehicle warranty can cover for every eventuality and as such there are some parts or situations that neither we nor any other provider can pay for. That said, aside from a handful of items listed under the exclusions, WSG extended warranties cover virtually all of your vehicle’s mechanical, electrical and electronic parts against failure.

Your WSG warranty excludes:

  • Serviceable and routine maintenance items such as brake pads and discs, tyres, bulbs and hoses, pipes or tubes
  • Bodywork and trim such as paintwork, glass, interior and wheels
  • Ancillary items such as water ingress, corrosion, manufacturer recalls, misdiagnosis or faulty workmanship / parts
  • Negligence or driver abuse, i.e incorrect / insufficient fluids, or overheating

Nobody likes unwanted surprises and that’s exactly why we’ve kept our exclusions to the bare minimum. You can download our policy booklets here.

How do I keep my vehicle’s warranty valid?

Please note that you have several obligations for keeping your WSG warranty valid. These are:

  • The vehicle must be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines by a VAT registered garage
  • The vehicle must be kept in a roadworthy, legal condition and be taxed, insured and hold a valid MOT certificate
  • Routine maintenance must be carried out as required
  • The claims process must be followed if you’d like us to consider your claim
  • Don’t ignore any warning lights, signals or gauges as you could make the problem worse, which may affect our liability

Not following the above may affect our decision to pay your claim and could potentially invalidate your cover depending on the severity.

Are pre-existing faults covered?

Unfortunately no extended vehicle warranty can cover for pre-existing faults and WSG is no exception. Some warranty providers will ask you to pay for a pre-warranty vehicle inspection to be carried out before your cover can start, to rule out any issues that may be present.

We don’t ask for inspections but instead apply a 30 day no-claim clause, meaning that you won’t be able to make a claim for the first month of your warranty.

This is to help us stamp out fraud and as a result, ensure that our warranty prices remain competitive for everyone. We feel that this is the fairest way for you and us.

Can I use my own garage for repairs?

Yes absolutely, but please note that labour rate restrictions may apply, depending on which labour rate you’ve selected.

On traditional cars and vans, the standard labour rate we pay is up to £65 + VAT per hour. If you’d like to use a main dealer or specialist for repairs, where labour charges can be significantly higher, you can add main dealer labour rates for a small additional premium. This option needs to be selected at the time of purchase.

On electric and hybrid cars / vans, we pay up to £70 + VAT per hour as standard. This allows for the more complicated diagnostics, parts and expertise required with these vehicles. Again if you wish to add main dealer labour rates, you can for a small additional premium at the time of purchase.

Some garages prefer not to deal with warranty companies so if you’d rather use one of the repairers we’ve worked with in the past, we can put you in touch. We also work directly with a number of specialist repairers for complex systems such as ECUs, turbos and automatic gearboxes.

You can make an unlimited number of claims throughout your cover, with each one up to your chosen claim limit. The maximum amount you can receive in total is the vehicle’s current market value at the time of claim.

How do I make a warranty claim?

Making a claim under your WSG warranty couldn’t be easier - just follow these three simple steps:

  • Step 1 - check cover. Check to see if the fault might be covered, or contact us if you’re not sure. The vehicle will need to be booked in at a garage.
  • Step 2 - fault diagnosis. The fault may need to be diagnosed if it isn’t obvious. Any diagnosis costs are your responsibility at this stage.
  • Step 3 - claim authorisation. The garage must contact us before any work is done. If it’s covered, we’ll issue a claims code and the work can begin straight away.

What to do once repairs are complete:

  • If the garage is able to settle the bill directly with us, you won’t need to do anything — we’ll arrange payment with them ourselves.
  • If it was carried out by your own garage and we’re either reimbursing them or yourself, we’ll need a copy of the repair invoice along with any service invoices or other documents we’ve requested. Please clearly mark the repair code and state who is to be paid.

Important:

  • Should you instruct the garage to commence work without our authorisation, you do so in the knowledge that your claim may be declined due to denying us the opportunity to inspect the vehicle and determine the cause of failure.
  • The garage will only be able to carry out the repairs once you have authorised them to do so.
  • You are responsible for any excess parts and labour charges that fall outside of our liability, plus any repairs which aren’t covered under your plan.
How do I pay for my warranty?

You can either pay for your WSG warranty in full or over 10 interest-free monthly instalments. For both options we use Bumper - the UK’s leading payment provider for vehicle repairs, servicing, parts and accessories.

How to spread the cost over 10 instalments

Applying for Bumper PayLater is simple - just select the 'Buy Now PayLater' option at checkout. You'll need to provide a few basic details and approval takes less than 60 seconds.

Your first payment will be taken immediately at the time of purchase. You'll then receive a confirmation email from Bumper outlining your payment schedule and agreement details. Bumper will send you a reminder email 3 days before each subsequent payment is due, so you never have to worry about missing a payment.

Bumper performs a soft credit check when you apply for the Buy Now PayLater option, but this won't affect your credit score. Bumper is required to report the status of your payment plans regularly. Keeping up with your payments can help improve your credit score, as these payments are reflected in your credit report.
